What Are Lip Fillers Made Of?

Most of today’s popular fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), which draws and holds water for a plump and hydrated look. Aesthetic injector Julia Jowett, PA-C says HA filler is “something that’s natural in your body, but produced synthetically in a lab” and that it is “very predictable in the tissue and it is reversible if for some reason we want to take it out.”

What Is the Best Filler for the Lips?

At La Jolla Cosmetic, our preferred fillers for lip enhancement come from the JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® families of products because they are smooth, easy to inject, and can achieve very soft, natural results.

“The two main products that I think are really beautiful in the lip because they can be very natural and very long lasting are Juvederm Vollure and Juvederm Volbella. They’re very soft and natural feeling, so people that don’t want to have something that they’re aware of when they’re rubbing their lips together, we can just give a really nice, subtle approach,” says Julia on the LJC Podcast episode titled Lip Flips, Duck Lips, and Fillers Oh My!

A few of our favorite fillers include:

How Much Filler Will I Need?

The amount of product you’ll need varies depending on your goals and baseline anatomy.  A single syringe of JUVÉDERM® contains 1 mL of product. 1 mL is a small amount of product but can achieve great results. To put this into perspective, there are 15ml in 1 tablespoon.

If you’ve never had lip injections before, our strategy for the most natural result is to add filler slowly over two appointments. At the first visit, we begin with 1 ml or less. We recommend a follow up appointment 2 weeks after to evaluate adding any additional product.

If you have had lip injections in the past, Jowett advises that “being mindful of how long things can really take to go away in the lips is one of the most important things because if you’re adding more product where it isn’t needed, it’s just going to be product on top of product and it’s going to create that puffy border and puffy look.”

Your Options for Customizing Your Lip Fillers

Creating stunning, natural-looking lip filler results is about more than just adding volume. Here are a few ways we can help achieve your dream look:

Define your vermillion border

This line separates the pink of your lips from your facial skin. Giving it some subtle definition really helps your lips pop.

Support your philtrum columns

These are the lines that run from the center of your nose down to your lips. They often flatten with age, but a little filler will help prop them up.

Minimize lines

Smoothing out the vertical lines around the lips that appear as we get older.

Volumize in the right places

One way we keep your results looking natural is by adding volume only in the center of the lips, not all the way out to the corners. This gives you a pretty pout rather than the infamous “duck lips.”

Add a lip flip

A BOTOX® Cosmetic lip flip uses 2 to 6 units of BOTOX® in the upper lip to turn it outward and prevent it from tucking under when you smile.

What Is It Like To Get Lip Fillers? Do They Hurt?

Everyone has a different tolerance, but there are a few steps we take to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible from start to finish:

  • Topical numbing cream: We apply this 20 to 30 minutes before your treatment to minimize any discomfort. For most people, this is all they need. Many fillers contain the numbing agent lidocaine, so you’ll become even more numb once your injections start.
  • Injectable nerve block: If numbing cream isn’t quite enough, we can inject lidocaine around the nerves to really desensitize the area.
  • PRO-NOX™: This optional nitrous oxide (laughing gas) addition is great if you’re nervous around needles and need a little extra help to relax.

All these options are local anesthetics, so you’ll be free to drive home from your treatment.

What Is Lip Filler Recovery Like?

After getting lip fillers, you can return to your usual activities right away. You will have some swelling that typically peaks around day 2 and mostly subsides within a week. You may also have some temporary mild bruising around your injection sites.

When Can I Wear Makeup After Lip Fillers?

After 24 hours, you can use your everyday makeup or cover up any remaining bruising. Do your best to keep the area clean and avoid reaching for dirty or expired products that may increase your risk of infection.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

Ultimately, the timeline is different for everyone. Lips move a lot, so fillers tend to metabolize there more quickly than in other areas of the face. Some people need a touch-up after 6 months, while others still have volume in place a year later. When you feel ready to re-up your volume, your injector will assess your lips and determine the best way to prolong your results.

What Are My Options if I Want Something That Lasts Longer?

Volbella is approved for use in the lips, and lasts up to 18 months. Unfortunately, non-HA products are not recommended for the lips due to the high mobility of the tissue in that area and there is an increased risk for adverse reactions.

Threads can be an option to build structure of the lips and enhance the vermillion border, which stimulate your body to build collagen naturally over time.

What Happens If I Don’t Like My Lip Fillers?

There’s nothing to fear with hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers because they can be dissolved at any time with an injection of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. It typically takes effect within just a couple of days. We always have this on hand in the very rare case we need to dissolve the filler to address a complication.

When it comes to reversing filler specifically in the lips, Julia adds, “That’s the really wonderful thing about using these products. In general, I love to use fillers that are dissolvable or reversible because over time your face is changing. As we know, we’re aging. And so if you’re putting something in that’s long lasting, or that can be there for 20 years – some of the patients that I see had lip implants or silicone put in 20 years ago, and it doesn’t look as good now because you change.— So using something that even though it’s long lasting, we want it to be shorter term on the lips because we want to be able to look good over time.”

How Much Do Lip Fillers Cost in San Diego?

Lip fillers at our La Jolla and Carlsbad locations are typically priced per syringe. The cost depends on your unique anatomy and the amount of product used. We’re committed to educating our patients about every detail, including the costs.

We’re happy to share more specific price ranges over the phone and will go over how the cost is calculated in detail prior to treatment. As a starting point, you can also view our dedicated pricing page for more information.
